When Life Hits You All At Once

2:00 AM

There hath no temptation taken hold of you but such as is common to man. But God is faithful; He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond that which ye are able to bear, but with the temptation will also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.  - 1 Corinthians 10:13
When life hits you all at once, and you are wondering what God could possibly be doing, He has a plan. He is working through your trials, and He will lead you through each one of them if you choose to follow Him. Whether you could be going through multiple deaths in your family, disease, divorce, failing classes, or a friend who no longer wants to associate with you, the Lord is still in control, and He is still the one who is writing your story if we give Him the pen to do so.

The Lord will not allow you to go through any temptation or trial that you cannot handle with His helpI have often seen and heard Christians omitting the last part and just proclaiming that the Lord will never give them something that they cannot handle; however, that is true, but they must rely on the Lord in order to make it through their trial. Many times, Christians will misread the Bible and take it out of context; when they do this, they hold onto pretend promises, and when the Lord does not fulfill these promises, they become angry with God. God cannot help us if we reject Him, so it is essential for us to lean on Him in times of trials. The Lord tells us in 1 Peter 5 to cast all of our care upon Him:

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. - 1 Peter 5:7-10

What if we do not cast our care upon the Lord? What if we do not go to Him with our anxiety, fear, or trial because we know that He will not give us more than we can handle? 1 Peter 5 tells us that the devil is seeking whom he could devour, but the Lord wants to strengthen and make us perfect through our trials; therefore, if we do not run to the Lord and rely on Him in times of trials, then we have already chosen to be an easy kill for the devil.

Sometimes everything seems like too much. When my grandfather passed away this past Saturday, my pastor made the statement "too much, too soon." And believe me, it was. My family is still mourning the loss of my younger brother who passed away two months ago, and now my healthy grandfather has passed away. It is a lot to handle, and the truth is that none of us can handle it alone. We are an extremely tight-knit family, but this is something that not even a close family can overcome alone. We need the Lord. We cannot handle this without His help. I feel as if I am no longer simply leaning on God; rather, every morning, I collapse at His feet and beg for His strength and peace that He so graciously gives to me every single day.

I have made a list of the highs and lows of my 2018. I started this in January because it started out as an extremely rough year, and I was excited to see my year turn into something beautiful. In short, I have faced many adversities this year. I think that God has chosen this year for me to be my year of trials, and that is okay.

It would be so easy to become bitter and want to give up; however, God never gives a reason to give up. Ever. The Lord gives us a way to escape whatever trial that we are facing in our life. It would be so easy for us to become bitter at God for taking so many family members in a short period of time, or to become bitter with others who still have their entire family; however, that is not going to be my story. My goal for this year is for others to see Christ magnified through my trials. In Romans, we can find that the Lord will actually use our brokenness and our trials:

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. -Romans 8:18

It is okay to grieve. It is okay to ask the hard questions that no one knows how to answer. It is okay to go through the process; however, it is not okay to feel bad for yourself and to live the rest of your life with the belief that you are the only one who this has ever happened to. You are not the only one who this has ever happened to, and you are most certainly not going to be the last. Sometimes the Lord allows us to go through multiple things at once to show others our faith through the fire. Other times, it is to help someone else later in life. Every single trial and every single time has a purpose.

  1. Brittany, This article is so well written. I can definitely think back to some moments in my life where I felt very alone and like I was the only one in a certain situation. I think that humanly speaking it is very real but spiritually speaking God is using this in our life to get our attention or to simply say trust in me (God). I know all things and to reassure us that we are not the only one in this certain situation. Alot of times it's easier said than done. We have to simply choose for God to use this terrible situation to the best. I'm praying for you sweet girl!

    1. Erica, I agree. God will often put situations in our life to draw us closer to Him, and we must simply put our faith and trust in Him to get us through. Thank you so much for your thoughts!
